There are two levels offered in this popular subject area.
Health and Social Care
OCR GCSE (Double Award)
This is an ideal qualification for students who want to develop a broad background in Health and Social Care. It is designed to form a qualification which is nationally recognised and provides the technical knowledge and understanding necessary to equip students with some of the skills they will need in the workplace or in further education or training.
Examples of appropriate employment to which a GCSE in Health and Social Care (Double Award) candidate might progress include: Nursery Nurse, Care Assistant, Childminder, Pre-school/Nursery School Assistant.
This award could also contribute towards meeting the entry requirements for access training for nursing and professions such as occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and pharmacy for example, or for teaching and working with people with disabilities.
Course Structure:
The course offered at South Chelsea College consists of three compulsory modules:
1. Health, social care and early years provision
2. Promoting health and well-being
3. Understanding personal development and relationships
Students will be expected to build a portfolio of their work in the first two modules, which will be assessed. The third module will be assessed through examination. The course will be accredited by OCR (Oxford, Cambridge and RSA examinations) and it covers levels 1 and 2 of the National Framework of Qualifications. Most students will take two years to complete the course.
This is an interesting but demanding course where students will need to be able to demonstrate an ability to work independently. The course involves academic study and is not a practical “hands-on” training in a Health and Social Care setting. Students will be expected to produce written work for their portfolios, which are an integral part of the GCSE qualification.
Entry Requirements
South Chelsea College requires that students have the equivalent of a GCSE in English, together with at least two further GCSE’s. Evidence of qualifications must be submitted at the time of application.
It is College policy to test students at the start of the academic year. Those students whose level of English or whose previous education is considered insufficient to cope with the course will be offered a key skills course instead, together with specialised English classes, which concentrate on the type of vocabulary required in a Health and Social Care setting.
Success in examinations at the end of this year will be necessary in order to progress to the GCSE Course. Otherwise students will be offered a course in an alternative subject.
Within the South Chelsea College course students will also continue to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.
