Computer Studies at South Chelsea College

An understanding of computers is essential in most modern careers. South Chelsea College offers a range of academic and professional programmes leading to internationally respected and accredited qualifications.

ACP progression chart

Students intending to study Computer Studies at South Chelsea College will be assessed upon arrival and advised as to which range of courses is most suited to their needs, unless they have previously gained verifiable and recognised qualifications elsewhere.

Business Technology - An Introduction to Computers
Foundation level 1

This course consists of a combination of:

  • City and Guilds 4242 "Basic Competence in Information Technology" (Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Database etc),
  • City and Guilds 3750 "Numeracy", a key skill in developing a student’s understanding and knowledge of mathematics, and
  • a Communications component, which is designed to enhance a student’s literacy skills (currently accredited via Pitman/City &Guilds examination).

Satisfactory completion of the course enables the student to gain up to three qualifications and to progress to more advanced computer or business studies.

Entry Requirements
No formal qualifications are required although students must demonstrate a sound understanding of spoken English. Students are offered an introduction to the understanding and application of computer technology, as well as developing key skills necessary to underpin their progress. No previous knowledge of computers is required and as the key skills within the course are taught at different levels, this is an excellent package for students who could gain confidence and benefit from additional literacy and numeracy support. Some classes on this course are designed to cater for those students who, while motivated, have had little previous access to education.

Advanced Business Technology – Foundation level 2

This course consists of a combination of:

  • ACP  "Integrated Business Technology" (Analysis, Structure and Presentation of Information using Data-base, Spreadsheet, Word Processing and Graphics Applications)
  • City and Guilds 7261 "Coding and Programming in Pascal", including an introduction to programming techniques, as a basis from which students can at a later stage in their studies be introduced to more advanced computer programming languages.
  • A Numeracy and Communications component which continues the development of key skills to support the student’s understanding of information technology.

Satisfactory completion of the course enables students to gain two qualifications and prepares them for computer work in a typical modern office environment, or, for further studies such as provided by ACP courses.

Entry Requirements
The course is designed for the individual who has already gained some practical experience of computer software, either through an introductory course such as the City and Guilds 4242, or through work experience. It is also suitable for students who do not have previous knowledge of computing if they have achieved a level of education in a range of 4-5 other subjects equivalent to pass grades at GCSE.

ACP – Association of Computer Professionals

The ACP is a professional organisation offering public examinations in computer studies at Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels. To sit these examinations you have to become a member of the ACP and the College will assist students in applying for membership.

Certificate in Information Technology & Programming

The one year certificate level covers practical programming, general computer theory and operating aspects

Course Subjects:

Applied Programming
An individual programming project written in an approved language is also required

Entry Requirements:
The ACP stipulates that applicants must have attained a satisfactory standard of secondary education (including a sound grasp of the English Language and a basic level of Numeracy). It is our experience that students are usually best suited to this course if they have achieved the equivalent of A-C grades at GCSE level or if they have some previous experience of computer programming.

Diploma in Information Systems Analysis & Design

The one year diploma level develops students understanding of Systems Analysis and Design, Software Engineering and Computer Systems for Businesses. Students are additionally offered an introduction to Java on this course. On completion of the Diploma programme students will be well qualified to either progress to university courses, further professional development or appropriate employment. The ACP Diploma is equivalent to a Higher National Diploma (HND).

Course Subjects:
Systems Analysis and Design
Software Engineering
Business Information Systems
Introduction to Java Programming
An individual programming project written in an approved High Level Language (HLL) is also required.

Successful completion of an advanced diploma is equivalent to a pass degree and provides access to Honours BSC and Masters degree courses in the UK and other countries.

Course Subjects:
Information Systems Principles and Networking
Information Systems Analysis and Design: Advanced Programming
Information Systems Management
Students are also required to submit a series of six assignments to demonstrate programming competence.
